Situated a stone’s throw from Christchurch First School on the south side of Frome, the Community Garden is an oasis of calm and fruitfulness amid the bustle of the Mount Estate.
After twelve years of continuous cultivation it is a very productive garden run for the benefit of the local community by volunteers who mostly live on or near the estate itself.
The produce – vegetables, fruit and flowers in season – is for sale on Thursday mornings from 9.30 to 12.30 at around half the price you’d pay in the shops. And of course it’s all freshly picked and grown without chemicals. What’s not to like!
The money we make from sales is spent on seeds, compost, tools, and essential bits and pieces for improving the garden and its productiveness. We don’t ask for extra funding because we pay for everything we need.
We’re lucky enough to have our own wooden cabin, a spacious tool shed and a greenhouse.
The whole idea of the garden is to give pleasure, provide lovely, nutritious food and enjoy ourselves. We drink a lot of tea, chat, celebrate, have fun. But we also work hard when there’s plenty to do, especially in spring and summer with sowing, weeding and harvesting to be done.
New volunteers are always welcome, whoever you are and whether you are experienced or not. Just give Des Harris a ring on 07879 539497 or come and see me at the garden on Thursday mornings.
